About the Knowledge Hub

The Doing Right By Birth Knowledge Hub is a curated collection of research, policy, and practice evidence on substance use, pregnancy, and parenting. It exists to help legal professionals and advocates find the peer-reviewed literature that informs their work, quickly and accurately.

Every summary is extracted by a subject-matter expert, reviewed, and approved before publication. We describe the strengths and weaknesses of each study so readers can weigh the evidence for themselves.

How summaries are written

Each article summary separates what the authors concluded from what the study actually demonstrates, notes the limitations that affect interpretation, and considers how the findings may be used, misused, or overinterpreted. Effect sizes and confidence intervals are preferred over p-values, and relative effects are translated into absolute numbers where possible.

Study designs and the evidence pyramid

Every summary states the study design. The glossary explains each design, where it sits on the evidence pyramid, and what a court can and cannot reasonably infer from it.

Equity and structural context

Differences in outcomes may reflect not only individual exposures but also access to care, housing, economic opportunity, surveillance practices, and structural racism. Summaries consider whether a study provides evidence about the mechanisms behind observed disparities or merely documents them.
